I was actually searching for tips on Chinese to English Learners when I came across this site that was much more compelling. This is a global news site with a particular focus on events in and around China and Southeast Asia. Although it cover stories, events, and conflicts throughout the world, there are links to cultural and news interest, particularly in China. Most links to China will be sourced through Xinhuanet, the online version of Xinhua News Agency, the state run news agency
of the Peoples Republic of China. There's a constant new lines feed that updates every few seconds with breaking headlines worldwide. One really interesting story tells what measures Chinese officials are taking to prevent the Ebola virus from crossing into China, a potential disaster of unimaginable proportions, given China's population and tight living quarters.
Anyway, I'm not sure how I might use this website in my classroom on a regular basis, but I would certainly be useful in government or current events. It would, however, be a good source for research in the curriculum project I designed for the seminar, China, the U.S. and Big Brother, largely because most of the material on the site coming from China is released by their government and therefore controlled. Fits right in with my unit.
