The summer seminar on East Asia Art and Literature, was my second with USC- US China Institute. Just like the previous seminar it was an extremely educational, amazing, and rewarding experience. As a 7th grade World History teacher, this seminar's offer me a great deal of resources to use with my students in my classroom. The last day visit to the Huntington Library, Chinese Garden of the Flowing Fragance, was breathe taking and inspirational.
I will like to plan a field trip for my students to visit and enjoy it. In addition, learning about contemporary Chinese art, Japanese and Korean literature and art, will be very useful for this school year when teaching about this civilization's early history. For the unit on Japan, the information that I learned about the world of Genji, and the imperial gardens will from now on be part of it. The Tale of Genji, is the first novel ever written, and it provides insight into the Japanese’s imperial life and well as entertainment. My students, will have the opportunity to read parts of the book, and watch the anime version of the Tale of Genji movie. Another, topic that I will be able to expand is Buddhism, because now I have more knowledge to share with my students.
After, this seminar I will have more than enough information on Korea’s art, literature, and history especially under the Mongol Empire Rule. Korea barely gets mention in the California State Standards, and I will like to change at least in my classroom. Korea, is a beautiful, and historically significant country. I truly, enjoyed being part of this seminar, all the professors were amazing, and Catherine did an amazing job organizing the seminar. Thanks you, for a wonderful educational and fun experience that I will gladly love to repeat.
