I am wondering how the confusion over the islands came about? I know the professor discussed this at the beginning of the seminar. I am having trouble understanding how the Japanese were able to purchase part of the island. How did the land come in hands of the Japanese private owner if it is located East of China's sea? I understand the importance of the islands, especially because the article mentions that the islands are surrounded in water that could be rich in gas and oil resources. I just don't comprehend how the dispute started.

One of the topics mntioned early in our class( I believe it was the first class) was the dispute between China and Japan over these islands in the East China Sea. They are called Senkaku by the Japanese and Diaoyu by the Chinese. Evidently, the dispute is heating up and looks to be escalating into a possible air confrontation as both countries are sending warplanes to the area and are close to engaging with one another.
