Clay, I was wondering if you could give more bibliographic information on these sources you provide. With our up-coming common core standards, my students need to learn how to properly cite sources. If I gave a copy of a reading to them that you have provided, it is pretty much required that students directly cite sources. Thank you for any extra information you can provide.

I wonder if Qichao was to visit NY today, what would his thoughts be. Would he still see Westerners' studies superior to those of the Chinese? What would he say about the US work ethic?

This would be a great source to introduce middle school students to the concept of nationalism and how it was used to increase morale in face of Japanese occupation of China. The students can also benefit from seeing how Chiang Kai-shek cited historic examples to back up his claims.

One of the claims that stuck out in this reading was the quote, "All men, things, and principles are embraced in the Great Way of Confucious. He is therefore, the most accomplished and perfect sage in the history of mankind." One of the 7th grade history standards is to identify bias in a primary source. This quote would be a great way to generate discussion in the classroom regarding opinions vs facts.

    Hi Rachel,
Many of the primary sources are from Ebrey, Chinese Civilization: A Sourcebook, 2nd edition, The Free Press, 1993. The Chiang selection is one of those. I compiled the Mao quotations from the several volumes of his selected works.

    China 1800 - 1950
What indicators do we have of the strength and stability of Qing China? What accounts for this remarkable success?

What were the internal and external factors that resulted in the collapse of the Manchu dynasty? Was there interplay among these factors? Which factors seem most important?

How did Republican China differ from its imperial predecessors? What were the aims and successes of the Kuomintang, especially during “the Nanjing decade”?

Love the readings on Mao. Mao was able to portray the imperialist bourgeoisie as the enemy, making the communist struggle a struggle against western ideology. This is brilliant because of the Opium Wars and the Treaty of Nanking. I noted in one of my Thursday posts that early Chinese communists did not see western democracy as a threat. Perhaps this is the time when the divide between Chinese communism and western democracy really begins.

"Boundless love goes with boundless perceptiveness"
This fits with my post about the letter from Liang in that he is accepting fully the power structure interpretations of what America is, especially the attributes of the "black man" and yet we find here the idea that without being fully perceptive of the uniqueness of each individual and situation, we judge and fail to love. Interesting idea.
