On Wednesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke of President Richard Nixon’s 1972 trip to China,
“I was a law student in 1972. I was a poor law student. I did not own a television set. But I was not about to miss history being made, so I rented one – a portable model with those rabbit ears. I lugged it back to my apartment and tuned in every night to watch scenes of a country that had been blocked from view for my entire life. Like many Americans, I was riveted and proud of what we were accomplishing through our president.

SpectatorKathryn Schulten of Primary Source has written a great blog entry with ideas and resources on how to teach about the devastating quake and tsunami. http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/09/guest-post-teaching-about-japan-one-year-after-the-disaster/?nl=learning&emc=learninga2_20120309
In addition to looking at the tragedy, the suggested lessons include items on how a debate over nuclear power has erupted, efforts to preserve family memories, and rebuilding. One of the most interesting of the links she provides is to a NY Times article about inventions that have been developed over the course of the last year to prepare for another disaster: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/22/business/inventions-offer-tools-to-endure-future-disasters.html?_r=1 .

SpectatorHi Folks,
Nallely and Xin will post an assignment sheet listing which of you needs to review and comment on which participant's curriculum unit. Please post your draft unit to the draft unit thread by January 6, 2012. Be sure that your unit includes all the components listed in the seminar requirements handout (available above - click on the pdf to download a copy).
Please review each other's units and comment on them (in the discussion forum -- focus on the aims, activities, and materials, offering suggestions for improvement) by January 13, 2012.
Please then incorporate these suggestions in revising your unit. Submit the revised unit by mail (hard copy and a digital copy on a cd) to theUTLA Fall Seminar
USC US-China Institute
3535 S. Figueroa Street, FIG 202
Los Angeles, CA 90089-1262Your units should be postmarked by January 17,2012. You should include photocopies of all readings. The digital copy on a cd or flash drive doesn't need to include those, but should include copies of all worksheets, handouts, and other materials that you create.

SpectatorThe Shen Yun performances have received good reviews. It's worth noting, though, that the group is sponsored by Falungong, a religious/health organization.
The Chinese government has declared Falungong a cult and has actively and sometimes brutally suppressed it since 1999. Here's the government's anti-FLG website: http://www.facts.org.cn/. It includes a couple of articles concerning the Shen Yun performances.
In Australia earlier this year, it seems the Chinese authorities sought to discourage schools from taking classes to performances: http://www.crikey.com.au/2011/02/23/theatre-group-raises-questions-about-chinese-consulate-intimidating-schools/.
Here are some FLG articles about Shen Yun, including showing a dvd version of the performance in rural China. http://clearwisdom.net/html/articles/2011/7/8/126576.html
Expect an impressive show.

SpectatorGreat links! Please keep them coming.
Also, good ideas on bringing theme parks into courses. Let's hear from others. How could they fit into an econ class, into a science course, or into a course on ancient history?

SpectatorGood point about Brasilia (or Canberra), two invented capital cities and about Las Vegas. None of those is close to Shenzhen in size (12 million people) or in the speed at which they rose. Also, Shenzhen didn't rise because it became a center of a national government, it rose because of business investment. Brasilia, Canberra, and Las Vegas are service-dominated cities, Shenzhen is a manufacturing superpower, which is now also adding education to its strengths.
