SpectatorFor Matt and others -- you can attach images to your post. You can only upload one photo at a time, but this allows you to provide a description for the images, so individuals can decide if they want to open them.
Here I'm attaching a photo from the election I'm here in Taiwan observing. It offers an action figure version of Hsieh Ch'ang-t'ing (Frank Hsieh), the Democratic Progressive Party's presidential candidate. The figure is standing in front of a clock showing the party's presidential and vice presidential candidates (the clock is in a Snoopy box). I took it during a visit to Hsieh campaign headquarters in the southern city of Kaohsiung.

Hi Folks, I just posted three items about migrant workers to the thread above. They are on p. 30 of that thread (1- click on the link above, 2- scroll to the bottom of that page, 3- click on the p. 30 link, 4- look for posts with migrant workers in the subject line).
The videos available for viewing are:
Migrant Workers in Shanghai
Going Home 2008
Migrant Workers -- music video
This is a subject with special relevance in California. Migrants produce our food, build our houses, and do so much more.

SpectatorTudou.com is China's biggest video sharing site. The link below is to a music video created to celebrate the vital contribution made by migrant workers (in the video they are called nongmin gong 农民工 or farmer-workers). Click on the button at the lower right of the video controls to expand the video to full screen.

SpectatorTens of millions of migrant workers who wanted to return home for Chinese new year were stranded at rail and bus stations, often in dangerous circumstances. Here is a video assembled with still photos of the tragic storm and energy shortage induced nightmare:

SpectatorSome may have seen the documentary Migrant Workers of Shanghai on Link TV. Here is a link to the channel's website. It features a 5 minute clip from the film.

The film explores the lives, hopes, and fears of those who are building Shanghai and China's other great cities.

SpectatorSean,
I'm not sure what you mean by this question. Mahayana Buddhism is more common in East Asia than Theravada.

SpectatorNoel mentioned the visit of Li Zhongjie. Here's a link to a story with photos. About 20 of us meet with Li.

SpectatorNaughton's coverage of Labor is quite interesting. You should scan ch. 8 (p. 179 ff), but spend a little more time with the migration / labor markets section. He has one section entitled, "The Migration Decision," that you may find interesting.

SpectatorThis Associated Press article (published by Newsweek, Feb. 24, 2008) details a "feng shui-influenced" McDonald's effort in a Los Angeles suburb (would it have killed them to be more specific?).
http://www.newsweek.com/id/114918/output/printI'm not sold - but McDonald's has a record of success in this regard. Check out Golden Arches East (which includes a chapter on China written by Yunxiang Yan, an anthropologist who sometimes participates in our teacher training seminars) for the story of McDonald's plunge into East Asia and its embrace by people there.

SpectatorHi JC,
Thanks for the post on this book on Muslim minorities in China. I think that many teachers would be interested in this -- please consider posting it to the larger Asia in My Classroom forum.

SpectatorWe'll have an article on Chinese gardens in the US in an upcoming issue of US-China Today, but for those interested in the new Huntington Garden (officially opening on 2/23/2008), here are some links:
official website: http://www.huntington.org/Advancement/ChineseGarden.htm
2 LA Times stories:

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-gardens24feb24,1,2106375.story?ctrack=1&cset=trueYang Ye (UC Riverside), who often speaks to teachers in our seminars, was one of the scholars charged with naming every tree, nook, bridge and building in the garden. His calligraphy can be seen on the teahouse in the garden.
I hope those who visit the garden will share a couple of your pictures via the forum. The place isn't cheap ($20/adults on the weekends), but there are group discounts and I think they have one free Thursday every month.
