SpectatorHello Everyone,
We look forward to seeing everyone this weekend. You will need to read this email carefully as it will provide you with directions, parking information, and schedule for this weekend. It will also list the things you must bring with you Saturday morning.
Directions to UCLA
UCLA is accessed from the Wilshire Blvd East exit on the 405 heading from either direction. After exiting Wilshire Blvd East, turn left on Westwood Blvd and you’ll be driving into the campus and towards the parking kiosk.
Parking
To obtain a parking permit for the day, please visit the parking information booth on Westwood Blvd. It will be in the center island on Westwood Blvd (see directions from the Wilshire exit above). Give the attendant the password: Study Tour. He/she will print you out a pass and direct you to parking Lot # 3.
Schedule and Where to Go:
We will meet in Bunche Hall, Room 10383. Visit http://www.ucla.edu/map/map_north.html to see a map of the northeast end of campus where both Lot # 3 and Bunche Hall are located. We’ll put up directional signs as well to help guide you.
Saturday
We will begin promptly at 9am – give yourself extra time to visit the parking booth, park, and walk to Bunche Hall ( I suggest getting to UCLA by 8:15)
We’ll provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Sunday
We will begin at 9am
We’ll provide breakfast and lunch
We’ll wrap at approximately 2pm (may go as late as 3pm)Hotel Accommodations
You will all be staying at the Hilgard House (927 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024 Tel: 310-208-3945, http://hilgardhouse.com)
Check-in isn’t until 3pm, so you’ll want to go directly to UCLA on Saturday morning and check-in Saturday night. You will be staying in double rooms (2 to a room) and roommates have already been assigned. You’ll check out Sunday morning before returning to campus for day two’s activities.
Please bring with you:
Your passport – we’ll need to keep these to turn in to the consulate in order to obtain your visas – we’ll do this for you
Passports must have 6 months of valid time left
One completed Chinese visa application form (you can download this form via the discussion forum: http://www.asia.ucla.edu/forum)
One passport photo for the Chinese visa
$50 cash for the visa
$250 cash – balance of deposit
Emergency contact information if you haven’t already provided thisThat should just about cover all the basics. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Take care,
Linda

SpectatorHi Folks,
I've announced this via email a couple of times, but wanted to get it into the forum as well.
We're having our reunion dinner and follow-up session tomorrow, Tuesday, April 18. We'll be in the EMB again. All members of the seminar should attend and everyone should invite another social studies/language arts teacher or a supervisor to attend. The session will be from 5 to 7 pm.
Please email me mailto:[email protected] to let me know if you'll be coming and if you'll bring someone. I really need this information to aid in ordering food.
We'll talk about the work you've done with your students and with your colleagues and we'll show off the curriculum units and websites that have been completed.
I look forward to seeing everyone.

SpectatorI took these photos earlier this week. I wish I could have photographed inside the store. The shopping was frantic and there was a bit of spectacle as well: Chinese women in Swedish garb singing Swedish folk songs.

SpectatorPerhaps you saw the Associated Press article about the newest Ikea in Beijing. I've attached it. Can you guess which portion of the article most surprised me?
In a moment I'll put up a couple of photos of the Shanghai Ikea.

SpectatorJack's review is greatly appreciated. I hope everyone else will start to view some films and post reviews.
Please post your film reviews in the Asia in My Classroom forum, in the Film Festival thread. This makes it easier for people to find info on movies.

SpectatorOne image. I wish I was permitted to photograph within the store, where to mark the 8th anniversary of Ikea's presence in China, they had Chinese women in Swedish garb singing what seemed to be Swedish folk songs.

SpectatorAnd another image.
Incidentally, the store was celebrating Ikea's 8 years in China with young women dressed in traditional (I guess) Swedish garb singing Swedish folk tunes. I desperately wanted to photograph this, but photos inside the store are not permitted.

SpectatorI missed the broadcast of Tank Man on PBS on Tuesday, but will be able to see the full program via the net starting on Friday.
Tank Man was broadcast just a week ahead of the visit of the Chinese Communist Party General Secretary to the U.S. It recounts the events leading to the famous stand off between this man and a line of tanks. It discusses whether or not the memory of Tiananmen has been extinguished.
